Zinbryta Side Effects: Liver and Immune System Problems





Zinbryta Side Effects. Last May, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Zinbryta (generic name: daclizumab) to treat adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis.

Is the drug effective? Well, its effectiveness has been proven after two clinical trials which involved more than two thousand patients. More from the FDA media release:

The effectiveness of Zinbryta was shown in two clinical trials. One trial compared Zinbryta and Avonex in 1,841 participants who were studied for 144 weeks. Patients on Zinbryta had fewer clinical relapses than patients taking Avonex.

The second trial compared Zinbryta with placebo and included 412 participants who were treated for 52 weeks. In that study, those receiving Zinbryta had fewer relapses compared to those receiving placebo.

What are the side effects of the drug that users should be mindful of? Well, here’s the list:

SERIOUS ZINBRYTA SIDE EFFECTS:

Liver problems. ZINBRYTA may cause serious liver problems (including autoimmune-related liver problems) that may lead to death. Symptoms of liver problems include: Nausea or vomiting, not wanting to eat, stomach pain, yellowing of the skin or whites of your eyes, unusual tiredness, and dark urine.

Immune system problems. Some people may develop immune-mediated disorders (a condition where the body’s immune system attacks healthy cells in their body) and other immune system problems. Symptoms of immune system problems include: skin reactions such as rash or skin irritation; tender, painful, or swollen lymph nodes, intestinal problems or colitis (with symptoms that include fever, stomach pain, blood in your stools, or diarrhea); and any new and unexplained symptoms affecting any part of the body.

Allergic reactions or serious problems that may affect different parts of the body such as your liver, kidneys, heart or blood. These allergic reactions may lead to death. Call your doctor immediately if you experience the following while using Zinbryta: fever, rash, swelling of the face, tongue or throat or trouble breathing.

Infections such as upper respiratory tract infection or a urinary tract infection.

Depression and suicide. Some patients using this drug may develop depression, depressed mood, or suicidal thoughts.

COMMON ZINBRYTA SIDE EFFECTS. The most common Zinbryta side effects are as follows:

  • upper respiratory tract infection,
  • flu
  • pain or swelling in your nose, throat, or mouth
  • bronchitis
  • abnormal liver function tests
  • dry, itchy, scaly, or inflamed skin (eczema)
  • rash
  • depression and depressed mood
  • swollen lymph glands

Because of the above serious Zinbryta side effects, the drug should not be used by anyone with a) liver problems, b) autoimmune-related liver problems including autoimmune hepatitis, and c) those who are allergic to daclizumab or any of the other ingredients Zinbryta.
